In this space, I share resources and ideas that I have accumulated through my personal and professional experience, as an English language learner, educator, leader, and parent.
I believe that learning a language is most meaningful when language development is:
- Discussed and Encouraged with ongoing conversations about language learning to help build confidence and help see language growth.
- Celebrated by recognizing milestones which foster pride and strengthen connection to our linguistic journey.

“Thanks for mentioning that you need to set up a dedicated area for your child to study. My son has special needs, so I think it would be good for him to learn remotely. I think not being in a busy classroom would definitely help with his sensory issues.”

“It did catch my attention when you said that speaking multiple languages benefits children and language exposure and resources impact them. This reminds me of my sister, who is interested in making sure that her three-year-old daughter will be under a dual language immersion program next month. I could imagine how she wanted to make sure that her daughter would have an environment that would allow her to speak two languages with freedom. ”

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to become proficient in a new language?
Language proficiency develops over time and varies by age, exposure, and opportunities to practice. On average, conversational proficiency can take 1–2 years, while academic proficiency may take 5–7 years. Consistent practice at home and school—reading, speaking, listening, and writing—helps accelerate growth.
What is the best way to support multilingual learners at home and at school?
The most effective support is maintaining and strengthening the home language while encouraging the new language. Families can read together, discuss daily routines, and celebrate cultural traditions. Schools can provide structured language development, access to grade-level content, and consistent communication with families. Both environments working together create the strongest outcomes.
How can teachers and administrators ensure multilingual learners succeed academically?
Provide scaffolded lessons, language-rich activities, and culturally responsive practices. Administrators can help by ensuring strong program models, compliance with state and federal laws, and ongoing professional learning.
Should students stop speaking their home language to learn English faster?
No. Maintaining the home language supports cognitive development, strengthens family relationships, and actually helps students learn English more effectively. Bilingualism is an asset.
How are multilingual learners identified and placed in support programs?
Most schools use a Home Language Survey and a standardized English language proficiency assessment. Based on results, students may qualify for language services. Families are informed and can ask questions or request more information at any time.
How can families track and understand their student’s language progress?
Schools share progress through report cards, language proficiency scores, and teacher communication. Families can ask for explanations of score reports, examples of student work, and ways to support language development at home.

I have worked with Dr. Sugely Solano for over 3 years, watching her transform the classroom experience for multilingual learners in middle and high schools. She’s passionate and dedicated to providing a true language learning experience for all students, which shows up in how she supports her teachers with ongoing professional development, collaborative PLC opportunities, and the implementation of data-driven instruction. Sugely’s expertise comes from her own personal experience coming to the US and also her vast knowledge of what is needed to fully prepare English learners to succeed in all classes, in and out of school, and for college, and career-readiness.
