Ensuring Equal Access for ELs

As a newcomer and immigrant to the United States, I vividly remember the challenges of navigating a new language, culture, and education system. These experiences shaped my deep concern for English learners in public schools who face similar obstacles today.

I am deeply troubled by the increasing reports of raids in schools targeting immigrant families. Such actions not only disrupt the lives of immigrant children and their families but also leave a lasting impact on American children who are friends and classmates of these students. Witnessing immigration officials take children from schools creates an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, undermining the safe and nurturing environment that schools are meant to provide. These experiences mark all children involved, causing emotional distress and further dividing communities.

Education is a fundamental right, not a privilege, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure every child, regardless of their immigration status, has access to the tools and support they need to succeed. Children should never be punished for decisions made by adults, nor should they be denied the right to a quality education simply because their families sought better opportunities in a new country. These students didn’t choose to migrate, yet they carry the weight of adaptation and resilience.

In this effort, I encourage educators and leaders to reference Secretary Cardona’s Dear Colleague Letter, which offers invaluable guidance and resources to support immigrant families and ensure their success in our schools.
